What makes a vehicle great for city driving?

When considering a vehicle tailored for city driving, several factors elevate its suitability for the urban jungle. First and foremost is size: compact and agile vehicles are easier to maneuver through tight city streets and bustling traffic. They also seamlessly fit into limited parking spaces, a common challenge in metropolitan areas. Fuel efficiency becomes paramount as city drives often involve frequent starts and stops, demanding more from your fuel tank. A car with a high mpg (miles per gallon) rating can save drivers significant money and reduce trips to the gas station. Advanced technological features, like rearview cameras, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, offer an edge by aiding in safe navigation amidst unpredictable city traffic. Furthermore, noise insulation is crucial.

A vehicle that can buffer the cacophony of the urban environment ensures a serene drive, even when surrounded by the honks and hums of city life. Lastly, a responsive engine that can quickly accelerate, coupled with smooth braking, is key to adapt to the ever-changing pace of city traffic. In essence, the ideal city car is a blend of compact design, fuel efficiency, cutting-edge technology, and responsive mechanics.

Why Drive an Electric Vehicle?

There’s never been a better time to go electric. Discover the many benefits of driving an all-electric vehicle like the All-New Nissan ARIYA or the Nissan LEAF. The ARIYA and the LEAF are not hybrids, instead, they get the energy they need to drive the electric motor between their front wheels from the large lithium-ion battery mounted along the floor of the car. Charging is as simple as charging your cell phone: plug it in, and let it go. Below are 8 other reasons to own an electric vehicle like the Nissan ARIYA or LEAF.

1. ZERO GAS, ZERO EMISSIONS

The Nissan ARIYA and Nissan LEAF burn absolutely zero gas, so they produces absolutely zero tailpipe emissions and no engine noise. So forget gas stations and put emissions testing behind you — in the 100% electric Nissan ARIYA and Nissan LEAF, they’re truly a thing of the past.

2. INSTANT ACCELERATION AND FUN

There’s nothing quite like 100% electric driving. There is no power band – just straight power for a rush of instant acceleration every time you hit the pedal. And all this performance comes without so much as a drop of gas, absolutely zero tailpipe emissions, and amazingly smooth operation.

And the Nissan LEAF is just as much fun through the twists and turns. The  floor-mounted battery pack creates a low center of gravity for a great ride and smooth handling, helping the Nissan LEAF corner with minimal body roll.

3. NO OIL CHANGES

Nissan ARIYA and Nissan LEAF aren’t powered by an internal combustion engine, so there’s no oil needed for lubrication, and no oil changes required to keep them running smoothly. Ever.

4. NO TUNE-UPS

Spark plugs, timing belts, fluid top-ups—forget about them. The Nissan ARIYA and Nissan LEAF are 100% electric, so get used to less maintenance, and less hassle.**

**Nissan recommends tires rotation every 7,500 miles. For more on the ultra low maintenance LEAF, check the Service and Maintenance guide for the recommended service schedule.

5. HOV LANE ACCESS

When the majority of commuters get stuck in stop-and-go traffic, your Nissan ARIYA or Nissan LEAF could potentially gain you access to HOV and Carpool lanes.***

***HOV/carpool access varies by state. Please consult state laws for eligibility.

6. PREFERRED PARKING

Ever dreamed of pulling into a concert, a movie theatre, your favorite grocery store or mall and getting the perfect parking spot every time? In the Nissan ARIYA and Nissan LEAF, it’s not just a dream; it could become your reality.^

^Public charging networks are provided by independent companies, and are not within Nissan's control. Availability of charging stations not guaranteed.

7. POTENTIAL TAX CREDITS, REBATES AND INCENTIVES

Depending on where you live and your personal tax situation, you may qualify for potential Federal, state, and city tax incentives like the New Qualified Plug-In Electric Drive Motor Vehicle Credit of up to $7,500 just for driving fully electric. Click here to see potential tax incentives that you may be eligible for. ^^

^^The incentives referenced are for informational purposes only. This information does not constitute tax or legal advice. All persons considering use of available incentives and additional perks should consult with their own tax or legal professional to determine eligibility, specific amount of incentives available, if any, and further details. The incentives and additional perks are not within Nissan’s control and are subject to change without notice. Interested parties should confirm the accuracy of the information before relying on it to make a purchase.

8. HOW MUCH WILL YOU SAVE ON GAS?

The amount you’ll save driving a Nissan ARIYA or a Nissan LEAF depends on the rate you pay for electricity, average gas prices, and even how far you typically drive. Use our tool to find your customized savings.^^^

^^^ Your Annual Gas Savings is the result of Daily Savings multiplied by the number of days in the month (30), and the number of months per year (12). Daily Savings is the Nissan LEAF® Daily Cost (miles driven daily /Nissan LEAF® MPGe, multiplied by cost of MPGe) subtracted from Daily Cost (miles driven daily / MPG, multiplied by the cost of gas). Your actual gas savings will vary due to a number of factors, including driving conditions, vehicle maintenance, and changes in energy costs.

The Nissan LEAF is available at any of our 7 Mossy Nissan locations in San Diego County.  Find out more about the Nissan Leaf, or visit a Mossy Nissan near you.

Spring Car Care Tips

For many San Diegans, spring means weekend road trips, family vacations, spring break trips and camping adventures.  Whatever your plans are, chances are you are getting ready to get on the road, however are you confident your car is in shape to get you there safely?  Winter’s cold and rainy weather can be hard on your car, and likely showing signs of wear & tear. Here are some car care tips to get your car ready for spring.

Change your oil and oil filter.
Changing your oil and oil filter at the intervals recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual is one of the best ways to keep the engine running trouble free. Neglecting to replace engine oil can result in poor engine performance, higher fuel consumption and even severe engine damage.

Check your fluids.
When you change your oil and oil filter, you should also check your fluids. Check your power steering, brake, and transmission fluids; your windshield washer fluid; and your coolant. If the levels are low, top them up, and flush/replace them as recommended in your owner’s manual.

Replace your wiper blades.
If they’re torn or cracked your wiper blades won’t do you much good in the middle of spring showers when visibility is reduced.

Check your battery.
Cold temperatures can do a number on your battery, so now is a good time to have it tested. You should also check to make sure that your battery is securely mounted and that the connections are clean, tight, and corrosion free. If your battery is more than five years old, you should consider having it replaced.

Check your lights.
Check all exterior and interior lighting to identify any problems. When your vehicle’s lighting is defective, other motorists may not get the message that you intend to stop or turn.

Check your belts and hoses.
Cold temperatures can harden and/or damage rubber, so it’s important to check your belts and hoses for damage. Check your hoses for hardening, softening, leaking, cracks, blistering, or other visual damage, and check your belts for looseness, cracks, frays, or glazing.

Check your filters.
Your car has many filters that are important to its longevity and should be replaced regularly. Check your engine air filter, your cabin air filter, and your fuel filter for damage or clogging and replace them if necessary.

Check your tires.
Check the pressure of all your tires (including the spare) monthly, and maintain the optimal pressure recommended in your owner’s manual. Check the tread for uneven or irregular wear and for cuts on the sidewalls.

Make car care a priority this spring to protect yourself and prolong the life of your vehicle! Not comfortable checking your vehicle yourself? Schedule a service appointment at one of our 7 Mossy Nissan locations for a free multi-point inspection.

Winter Service Tips To Save Time And Money

Winter Service Tips To Save Time And Money

You may not think about getting your car ready for winter living in sunny San Diego. However, spending some time preparing your car for winter not only can help prevent a breakdown or accident, but it can also save you money on repair costs and gas. We put together a few quick and easy winter service tips. Some things you can do yourself, while others require a trained service technician. All will save you money down the road.

1. Get a tune-up

If you’re due for a tune-up, schedule one in the fall. Cold winter weather magnifies existing problems such as hard starts, and sluggish performance. Check your owner’s manual for the tune-up schedule and follow it.

2. Change the fluids.

Six different fluids should be changed before the colder winter temperatures come. These include brake system fluid, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid, and suspension differential fluid.

3. Change your oil and oil filters.

Regular oil changes prevent overheating and buildup of grime. Changing the oil also helps with fuel efficiency and reduces the possibility of engine failure.

4. Check your brakes.

Brakes are your car’s most important safety system. Test your brakes before the cold and rainy weather, and make sure to get your brakes and brake fluid checked. Replace brake pads if necessary, so you’ll be able to stop, even on slippery winter roads.

Ask your service advisor to check the emergency brake as well. Even if your brake pads are good, the cables or mechanical elements can seize or break, especially if they are unused.

5. Clean and check your car battery.

Cold weather is hard on batteries. Have the battery and charging system checked for optimum performance each fall. It’s especially important because so many computerized safety systems run off battery power.

You can use a tester to determine if you have a weak battery. If you aren’t comfortable doing this, schedule an appointment at one of our 7 Mossy Nissan locations.

6. Make sure your heater and defroster still work.

Check the heater and defroster in the fall, before you need them, to determine if they are working properly. If they’re not, get them fixed ASAP.

Check the heated seats, too, if your car has them.

7. Replace windshield wiper blades.

As a general rule, wiper blades should be replaced every six months. If yours have been leaving patches on your windshield, replace them now before the cold weather stiffens the rubber even more.

It’s also a good idea to check the rubber seals around your car’s doors and windows.

8. Test your headlights.

Shorter days in winter lead to more driving in the dark, using your headlights. Check that your car’s exterior and interior lights and headlights work and are properly aimed. If headlights seem to be less powerful than they used to be, clean them. Use only a special cleaner that won’t scratch the finish.

9. Prep car tires for winter.

To prepare your car wheels for winter, plan to rotate tires in the fall, for more even wear and a more comfortable ride.

In winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly. Always check tire pressure in the driveway. And don’t forget to test the spare, too, especially if you’ve been lucky and haven’t needed it for a while.

10. Check the exhaust system.

Check your car for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. A detector made for vehicles will alert you to problems.

11. Keep your gas tank full.

When winter comes, keep the gas tank at least half full at all times to reduce the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing.

12. Put together a winter emergency kit.

Planning a road trip to go skiing or snowboarding? Make sure you have a winter survival kit in your car in case things don't go as planned! It only takes a few minutes to gather most of these items and they could save your life!

Your kit should include blankets, socks, hats, mittens to keep you and your passengers warm. A source of heat like a can heater or multiple wick candle - don't forget matches or a lighter! Water and a metal container suitable for melting snow into drinking water. Food - such as hard candy, energy bars, nuts, and raisins. And don’t forget a bright red or orange cloth and whistle to signal for help, and an AM/FM radio plus a flashlight - both with new batteries!

Other lifesavers? A shovel, a good spare tire, jumper cables, tire chains, road flares, and a small tool kit can become your lifesavers if a bad situation comes around!

We want all of our drivers to be safe this winter season. Mossy Nissan can help you get ready with a free multi-point inspection. We wish you a safe holiday and winter season this year!

This technology can even detect a pedestrian in the crosswalk and can stop you in your tracks if necessary.

Distracted Driving Series: CELL PHONE SAFETY – Tips to stay safe with Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™ Features

It is well documented that cell phone use while driving contributes to distracted driving. The act of typing in a number and then holding a device while driving with a single hand on the wheel is most definitely adding to accidents and distracted driving mishaps. A hands-free mobile phone system like Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™ can minimize such issues, allowing drivers to do a variety of things without ever taking their eyes off the road or their hands off the steering wheel.

Nissan really has the jump on technology. But sometimes consumers don’t take advantage of the high-tech features. This blog will help you learn more about the Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™ features available in many 2019 Nissans like the Rogue, Altima, and Sentra.

HERE ARE SOME HANDY “HOW TO” TIPS:

Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant

  • You can activate the Assistant by pressing a button on the steering wheel
  • If you say, “Read Text,” the assistant will read out your messages to you.
  • If you say, “Next Text,” you can move on to the next text that was recorded in the Nissan Connect system.
  • You can also respond or send a new text message to someone by saying “Send text message to..” followed by the contact’s name.
  • Or you can choose one of the many pre-written messages like: On my way, Running late, Driving, can’t text, etc.
  • You can also customize your own messages and add them into the list of pre-written messages.

Hands-Free Calling – Bluetooth Feature

  • You can accept a call by pressing the phone button on the steering wheel.
  • You can use this feature with simple voice commands. For example, if you want to call someone:
    • You can just say, “Call” and say the person’s name from your contacts
    • Or say, “Dial Number” and say that person’s phone number

AVAILABLE APPS:

Android Auto™ supports SMS and offers integration with third-party messaging apps like Google Hangout, WhatsApp, Skype, ICQ, Kik, and others.

Apple CarPlay® on the other hand, supports SMS, iMessages, and the third-party messaging app, WhatsApp.

MUSIC:

When it comes to music, both Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® offer a variety of integration with third-party audio streaming apps, apart from their native audio apps like Google Play, Music, and iTunes. This makes it easy for you to play music from any streaming services you use.

Apple CarPlay® has the same options as services like Spotify. Users have options on the home screen for playlists, browsing music, and 'Now Playing' information.

Similarly, the audio interface of Android Auto™ includes the same options that Android users are familiar with, like what’s playing next, playlists, recently played, and shuffle.

NAVIGATION:

You can use available navigation apps to get real-time traffic alerts and avoid road hazards, speed traps, or find the fastest route. Or see where you can take a break and find a bite along the way.

Ultimately, when it comes to cellphone safety, Nissan has you covered! For assistance with any of these tips you can go to any of the 7 local San Diego Mossy Nissan dealers, where our staff will gladly help you set up your phone or take you through the high-tech features. Stay safe!

Tired of Traffic? Try Selfless Driving

San Diegans! I’m sure you’re tired of waiting endless hours in traffic!
What would you do if you learned that you could possibly avoid it?
Well… You can so long as you AVOID “Selfish Driving”.

The amount of time that San Diego drivers are spending on the roads is undeniable. Lately, the time we are spending in traffic seems to be growing outrageously. This is not only due to the increasing number of cars on the road, it also has to do with us as individual drivers.

It may seem unbelievable, as we do not like others questioning our driving. Nonetheless, researchers have found answers to preventing traffic saturations, and all it takes is… we as DRIVERS being selfless while on the road.

The Rapid Route Epidemic
As San Diegans we know our city, meaning we know the “faster” routes, freeways and shortcuts; and if we don’t, well we Google it or we use our GPS. We all love technology and it comes in handy when deciding what the faster route is to get home after a long day at work. But does it always present the best solution?

Researchers at MIT have thoroughly followed the ongoing traffic saturations and have collected data on simulations created over the years. They have concluded that a main reason for this wide traffic congestion is due to “selfish driving.” Specifically, to find the faster route through our GPS systems, we cause traffic to become worse. We ultimately all end up choosing the fastest route offered and overlook the fact that others trying to get to the same destination are offered the exact same route.

I know we are all thinking – “well, what is the best solution if I want to be at my destination in a timely manner?”

Rerouting Is The Best Option
Yes, we all have busy lives and complex schedules; however, the simulations held by the MIT researchers have determined a rather uncomplicated solution—we must be selfless drivers!

The research suggests that doing the unusual can potentially resolve traffic congestion; for example, taking a route that may have a few minutes delay. While it may seem ridiculous to try this approach, researchers found through simulations in major cities, that rerouting proved to be significant. Redirecting drivers to alternate routes managed to decrease the flow of traffic by as much as 30%. Additionally, routes that were shown as taking 5-7 minutes longer, ended up saving others a few minutes.

What This Means for San Diegans
This is a great opportunity for San Diegans to be able to work around congested traffic by taking the initiative to be a selfless driver.

While deciding to take alternate routes will not save you a large amount of time, the overall solution is to consider remedying traffic for the city as a whole.

The All New 2018 Nissan Leaf Takes Home KBB.com’s 5 Year Cost to Own Award

The all-new 2018 Nissan LEAF, the best-selling electric vehicle in the world, has taken home Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com 5-Year Cost to Own Award in the electric vehicle category at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show this week.

The 5-Year Cost to Own Awards honor new vehicles and brands with the lowest projected ownership costs, based on Kelley Blue Book's 5-Year Cost to Own data for new cars for the initial five-year ownership period. It takes into consideration depreciation, expected fuel costs, finance and insurance fees, maintenance and repair costs, and state fees for all new models over the initial five-year ownership period.

The all-new 2018 Nissan LEAF, which went on sale last month, has been completely reinvented for its second generation, combining greater range with a dynamic new design and the latest Nissan technology. The new LEAF embodies Nissan's Intelligent Mobility, featuring technologies such as ProPILOT Assist, e-Pedal, Automatic Emergency Braking and more.

"Nissan Intelligent Mobility is about applying the latest technology to set a new benchmark for exciting and safe driving and the all-new Nissan LEAF delivers on that in every way," said Brian Maragno, director, Nissan EV marketing and sales strategy. "In addition to the exhilarating drive, EVs are inherently less expensive to operate than gas-powered cars and the 2018 Nissan LEAF provides more range, content and technology at a lower MSRP than the previous generation, offering customers more value at a lower price."

The 2018 LEAF S starts at just $29,990 and adds attractive new styling inside and out, a 40% increase in driving range, a 37% increase in horsepower, e-Pedal, Automatic Emergency Braking with a price that's $690 lower than the previous model.

The 2018 LEAF SV includes the S trim's long list of standard features – then adds Intelligent Cruise Control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The top trim level, the 2018 LEAF SL, comes standard with additional features like Bose® Premium audio system, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Intelligent Around View Monitor and a portable L1/L2 charging cord.

The All-New 2018 Nissan Leaf gives you more self-driving experience with the new ProPILOT Assist!

The Nissan Leaf is the top-selling electric vehicle in the world. Sure, Tesla and Chevy get all the hype with the Bolt and Model 3, but with more than 290,000 cars sold, Nissan's little electric car is the one people are buying. After seven years without a design refresh, the automaker dropped a new and improved model to continue to dominate the EV world. Although, that task will be a lot tougher thanks to increased competition.

The new Leaf starts at $30,000 and has a 150-mile range. That's really what everyone wants to know, so let's get it out of the way. Besides traveling farther on the road, the car is an all-around improvement over the outgoing version. It has a stiffer chassis, better steering, a way better design and Nissan's first foray into semi-autonomous driver (ProPilot Assist is an option).

When it comes range, the Leaf sits between the likes of Honda's Clarity EV and the Hyundai Ioniq EV, which hover around the 100-mile mark, and the 200-mile-plus Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3. That said, at 150 miles, its range is better than most in the increasingly crowded EV market. The closest real competitor is the Volkswagen e-Golf, with a 125-mile range and roughly the same starting price. But the Leaf has a secret weapon: Nissan's aforementioned semi-autonomous ProPilot Assist system

While Nissan is a bit late to the semi-autonomous game, ProPilot is a solid system on par with nearly every other automaker's combination of lane-keep assistance and adaptive cruise control. While it performed marvelously on the highway, it also did a bang-up job on Napa's backroads, something none of these systems is really made for but is a good indication of how well they read lane markings.

The vehicle stayed within its lane at or slightly above the speed limit and even around corners sharper than those found on the average highway. Unfortunately, we never encountered stop-and-go traffic, but the adaptive cruise control was able to track the vehicle ahead of it at a line for a stop sign.
Thankfully, driving the car is a sharper experience. The Leaf kicks out 147 horsepower with 236 pounds of torque, which delivers quick bursts of speed off the line and while driving. But it's not sustainable, after few seconds you're reminded you're in an economy EV. Considering that most buyers will be using it in urban areas where swift, small bursts of acceleration (to get out of tight situations) are all they really need, it's not so much a ding as a reality check.

On the efficiency end, during our drive with the Leaf, the 150-mile stated range seems pretty much on par with our experience. I drove the Leaf 118 miles through winding mountain roads on a single charge. I spent most of our drive in "normal" mode. I also tested the vehicle's "Eco" mode and the e-pedal one-pedal driving system. I returned the car with a 9 percent charge or about 14 miles left on the battery.
The test was held on and around the rural mountain roads near the town of Calistoga, north of San Francisco. In my daily commuting life, driving through San Francisco, I'd more than likely use the e-pedal system extensively. It brings the car to a gentle stop when you lift your foot off the accelerator. After a few tries I was able to get the car to stop right at the stop sign without using the vehicle's brake. That was more of a personal win than anything else.

Nissan says that e-pedal will keep the car stationary on up to a 30 percent grade. I never encountered that steep of a road to test it on, but it was solid on the few hills I did encounter. It'll be interesting to see how it handles the streets of San Francisco.
While the drivetrain (powered by its new 40kWh battery -- up from 30 kWh found on the previous model) is a solid performer and the handling of the vehicle improved, I'm not a fan of the sitting position and leg room. I'm 6-foot-3, and I felt like I was way too close to the dash and the seat was higher than my liking. If you're taller than me, the Leaf probably isn't for you. Anyone shorter than me, should probably be fine.

Sure, the old Leaf was the number-one-selling EV in the world, but things have changed in the past seven years and Nissan needed to step up its game -- and with the new Leaf, it did. This is largely thanks to the new and impressive ProPilot Assist system option. I'm a fan.
