Affordable HEV Technology debuts soon in the new 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid

Affordable HEV Technology debuts soon in the new 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid

When it comes to sustainable mobility – including electric vehicles and gasoline/electric hybrid systems, Nissan is known for its innovative approach. More than 75,000 Nissan LEAF EVs have been sold around the world in its first two years, affirming Nissan's position as the global leader in affordable production electric vehicles and advanced Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery technology. The company's "one-motor, two-clutch" gasoline/electric powertrain parallel hybrid system made its production debut in the United States in spring 2011 in the rear-wheel drive Infiniti M Hybrid – a vehicle delivering more than 350 horsepower and 30 miles per gallon fuel efficiency.

Now Nissan has adapted its advanced Intelligent Dual Clutch System to create a new front-wheel/four-wheel drive hybrid system that debuts in the fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder SUV (for full details on the 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid, please go to NissanNews.com).

While the high performance hybrid system utilized in the premium Infiniti M Hybrid is highly appropriate to a luxury sports sedan, the new Pathfinder's hybrid system is designed to provide milder performance and fuel economy gains at a more affordable price for a wider customer base. Said Nissan North America, Inc. Vice President, Product Planning Pierre Loing: "The new system used in the 2014 Pathfinder Hybrid serves as the natural evolution from conventional internal combustion powertrains to the wider adaption of hybrid systems. With its compact packaging and light weight design, it is ideal for use in family vehicles such as the Pathfinder where interior passenger and cargo space are critical – and where the system's design preserves the same abundant amount of space offered by the conventional Pathfinder."

Three key elements are critical to the design of the new hybrid system, all of which are already available in the Nissan technology catalog:

  • A range of downsized internal combustion engines, such as the new Pathfinder Hybrid's 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder – which has been fitted with a Roots-type supercharger to give it total horsepower (250 hp with HEV system) and torque (243 lb-ft) similar to the Pathfinder 3.5-liter V6-equipped model.
  • An advanced Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission) that maximizes engine operating efficiency with both the gasoline engine and electric motor compared to a fixed gear ratio transmission. Nissan's industry leadership in CVT design includes the latest generation Xtronic CVT®, used in all Pathfinder models, that features greatly reduced internal friction, a wider ratio coverage than most automatic transmissions, and compact size – allowing the Pathfinder's CVT and integrated motor-clutch configuration fit in the same space as the conventional vehicle's transmission.
  • And finally, a compact Li-ion battery system that is both powerful and easily configurable for a variety of applications so as not to intrude into the passenger or cargo areas. For use in the new Pathfinder Hybrid, the battery fits compactly under the 3rd row passenger seat, so there is no difference in passenger or cargo volume versus the conventional Pathfinder models.

"This new system is not only adaptable to front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations like with the new Pathfinder Hybrid, it is completely scalable depending on vehicle design or segment," said Loing. "For example, with Pathfinder it is used with the supercharged 2.5-liter engine, 15 kW electric motor and relatively small battery pack – retaining solid SUV capabilities including standard towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. For use in an urban compact or sedan, the system might include a smaller 2.0-liter engine but a more powerful electric motor and larger battery to extend the pure electric driving range for city stop-and-go traffic use. There is complete design flexibility with this system – along with an affordability factor because it uses readily available components."

The New Nissan FF-Hybrid System in Detail

Compact and adaptable to vehicles of any size, the new FF-Hybrid powertrain achieves smooth and direct acceleration, excellent fuel economy and it significantly narrows the price premium over conventional internal combustion engines.
As with the FR-Hybrid, the FF-Hybrid utilizes the unique one-motor, two-clutch configuration known as the Nissan Intelligent Dual Clutch System.  The electric motor is linked with a Lithium-ion battery. Positioned between the gasoline engine and the Xtronic CVT® (where the torque converter would normally be), the motor also functions as a generator, conveying energy from the CVT to the battery upon deceleration. As for the two clutches, one is installed between the gasoline engine and the electric motor, the other between the motor and the CVT.
When both clutches are engaged, the engine and electric motor connect directly to the CVT, allowing the electric motor to augment torque from the engine as required. This creates the potential for powerful acceleration.

The high input/output Li-ion battery is automatically topped up by regenerative power from the brakes by converting the vehicle's kinetic energy otherwise lost in braking.
Pairing this battery with a smaller engine than conventional gasoline vehicles, closely integrated with an electric motor and CVT, results in a highly compact and cost-effective package that can be adapted for use in a range of applications.

Nissan GT-R Egoist Unveiled!

Nissan GT-R Egoist Unveiled!

If the Nissan GT-R doesn't boost your vehicular ego enough as it is, the next iteration seems to be designed to do just that. Buzzing the internet for the last few days, real information has come out from Nissan Japan concerning their Spec-M and the Nissan GT-R's future. We've seen the visual touches that are occurring. The new, LED-adorned front fascia is a thing of eye-catching beauty, while the new carbon fiber rear diffuser is a more subtle stylistic touch. The wheels, 20" works of art they are, are being redesigned to eschew themselves from the subtle side of visual flair back to the radical and aggressive. And, above all else, the car which was already a performance power-house is getting a bit of a boost. A very good bit of a boost. The vehicle will definitely cross the 500HP thresh hold, but by how much is a question. Some people with "source information" are claiming as much as 545, although 530 seems to be the safest bet at this point. That's right: 530 HP is a safe bet. So, you take the most impressive automotive machine in production right now (at least, the most impressive with a price tag under a quarter million), give it some more get-up-n-go, and adorn it with lighter weight, truly beautiful, exterior modifications and what do you have? You have the Egoist.

Yeah, you read that right: the Egoist. This car is meant to not only strike fear in the hearts of others but to also make you puff out your chest with pride and add a little more swagger to your step. Of course, the GT-R already does that, but with 530HP now, it will undoubtedly do so even more. Especially considering that the current GT-R boasts 485 power, so this is no small jump. 485 to 530 is a big difference, and will definitely shave large chunks of time off of the GT-Rs already unbelievably impressive performance numbers. Wow. This is exciting, and I can't wait for the official announcements and numbers.

Watch the fastest Nissan GT-R in the world hit 250 mph in 22.6 seconds

Watch the fastest Nissan GT-R in the world hit 250 mph in 22.6 seconds

On a cold morning in Russia, competitors in the Moscow Unlimited Standing Mile event readied for action, seeking the ultimate speed from their tuned missiles. One competitor, piloting a 1,800 hp Nissan GT-R by Oberlin, Ohio, based tuners Switzer Performance, sought to claim the title as "world's fastest GT-R." Completing the mile in a reported 22.602 seconds, the machine nicknamed "Goliath" hit 250 mph to become the undisputed tsar of the GT-Rs.

Tym Switzer, owner of Switzer Performance, prides himself on creating the fastest GT-Rs imaginable and yet ensuring it remains user-friendly. “It’s important to realize, this is still a 4,000 lb. streetcar with a full interior, AC, stereo – it even has the stock seats," says Switzer. "It’s a real, drivable streetcar, albeit at the limits of what most people would tolerate. The only ‘race stuff’ in the car is the fuel."

Having driven a 1,000 hp GT-R tuned by Switzer, I concur. Only, my brain can't fathom what a blend of almost 1,800 Japanese and American stallions must feel like, especially on a drizzly day in Moscow just feet from a flimsy iron railing. "In the '90s," Switzer says, "a 1,000 hp street car was unheard of. Now? Fifteen hundred hp and people want more – they think they do, anyway, but very few people really know what ‘pushing the envelope’ means."

In fact, Tym Switzer had to plead with his Russian client to be more conservative; that is, until the client explained that he was well aware of the risks and demanded the car be made to his specifications anyway. While ultimate performance is Switzer's calling card, utilizing that power with a linear curve ensuring the car remains stable, specifically upon launch, is key. Switzer attests this differentiating attribute to their Syvecs engine management system. In this case, it helped their Russian client speed to 250 mph and a claimed GT-R record, a speed, according to event organizers, that has only been surpassed by two other cars – a 267 mph Ford GT and a 250 mph and change Chevy Camaro.

Last time I was in Switzer's shop in Ohio, driving their Ultimate Street Edition GT-R, there was a "Goliath" being built. At the time, I wondered quite how fast a car that boasts 80-percent more power than the insane GT-R I drove (which was faster to 130 mph from 60 than even a Bugatti Veyron) must be. Well, I guess I now have the answer: Very.

The All-New 2014 Nissan Rogue comes with confidence standard!

The All-New 2014 Nissan Rogue comes with confidence standard!

Confidence comes standard
Like every Nissan vehicle, the all-new 2014 Rogue comes equipped with a suite of standard safety, driving, and convenience features designed to help inspire confidence behind the wheel, and make every ride better, safer, and more enjoyable.

Forward Collision Warning
Sensors in Rogue's front bumper are continually monitoring the road ahead and calculating the distance to the vehicle in front of you. If the system senses you are closing in too quickly, you will be alerted with visual and audio cues.

Blind Spot Warning
If a vehicle is in your blind spot, indicators on the Advanced Drive-Assist® Display and next to your side mirror will illuminate. If you signal to change lanes while a vehicle is still there, a chime and a warning light alert you of its presence.

Lane Departure Warning
As you drive, the rearview camera monitors the lines on the road, and if you stray from your lane, the Lane Departure Warning System will let you know with audio and visual alerts.

Moving Object Detection
Moving Object Detection uses the cameras of the Around View® Monitor to help you avoid bumps and collisions. It provides visual and audible warnings if the system detects moving objects nearby, and is particularly handy when you are pulling into and out of tight parking spaces.
Clever. Careful. Confident.
Class-Exclusive 360° Around View® Monitor

The all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue has an available class-exclusive Around View® Monitor to make backing-up and parking a breeze. The system works by converting the view from each of four wide-angle cameras (in the front, rear, and side mirrors) into a composite overhead view of your Rogue. Now you can see your vehicle's position in relation to its surroundings on all sides, avoiding not only the car behind or in front, but saving your wheels from nasty curb damage.

Nissan today debuted the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue. For the first time, assembly of this vehicle moves to the U.S. at Nissan's Smyrna, Tenn. plant. More than 900 jobs were added to support the production.

This is the company's fifth totally redesigned model to come out in the last 18 months.  The 2014 Rogue follows the all-new Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and Versa Note. Nissan Division sales, spurred by gains in these top-selling, core-models rose 24.3 percent in August to 108,614 units. This was an August record.

"It was time to refresh our model line. When we went through the 2008 financial crisis, we delayed several products. Our product portfolio was five to six years old, and it was time to bring out the new ones," said Carla Bailo, senior vice president, research and development for Nissan.

The Rogue is Nissan's second best-selling vehicle in the U.S. lineup.  This new model has bold new styling, a premium interior meant for multi-tasking, and an array of available technologies.

NissanConnect with Navigation is one available option.  NissanConnect Apps can now come on this model for the first time.  Class-exclusive Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning are also available, so drivers can see 360 degrees around the car and even get warned when something is in the way.

"There is growing demand for compact SUVs around the world due to their user-friendly combination of right-sized exteriors, flexible interior utility and low environmental impact," said Fred Diaz, divisional vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. "With this exciting, innovative, all-new design, Nissan is aggressively targeting increased sales and share in every market. By sharing development costs, while adapting powertrains, designs and equipment offerings for each specific region, Nissan has been able to add features and technologies while keeping prices affordable. No matter the specific market nameplate, it's a guaranteed winner."

The 2014 Rogue's new exterior design provides a premium, high-quality look and feel with available LED headlights, standard LED signature daytime running lights, outside mirrors with integrated turn signals and rear spoiler. Also available are a power panoramic moonroof and a power rear liftgate.

For the first time, Rogue will offer optional 3-row/7-passenger seating, thanks to its improved interior packaging efficiency. Among the many interior highlights are the innovative, class-exclusive*** Divide 'n Hide® Cargo System providing 18 adjustable variations (two-row models) between the cargo and occupant areas. The premium Rogue interior also offers exceptional passenger and cargo versatility, with best-in-class*** front headroom. "Rogue's bold, dynamic new styling is going to generate tremendous attention," said Diaz. "And once buyers take a look inside at the roomy, premium interior and experience the long list of affordable technologies, we know they'll be delighted."

Available Rogue technology features include NissanConnect? with Navigation and NissanConnect? Apps; Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection; Blind Spot Warning; Lane Departure Warning; and Forward Collision Warning.

Every 2014 Nissan Rogue is equipped with a responsive 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine rated at 170-horsepower and a best-in-class*** 175 lb-ft of torque. Also standard are an advanced Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), and 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and a choice of an intuitive All-Wheel Drive system or front-wheel drive. An added level of driving confidence is provided by the new suite of confidence-inspiring dynamic technologies, featuring Active Trace Control, Active Engine Braking and Active Ride Control.

Fuel economy is projected to be best-in-class**** 33 mpg highway for front-wheel drive models (2014 EPA ratings not available at press time) - representing an 18 percent improvement in highway fuel economy versus the 2013 model. The new Rogue carries the distinctive "PURE DRIVE" badge, signifying Nissan's commitment to developing more environmentally friendly transportation for every market.

The 2014 Nissan Rogue is offered in S, SV and SL models and will be assembled in Smyrna, Tennessee.
