First Datsun production model for Russia Unveiled

First Datsun production model for Russia Unveiled

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Datsun pulled the covers off its all-new car for Russia on April 4, 2014 in Moscow.
The Datsun launch in Russia is particularly significant for the global expansion of the brand, as it is a key market that offers Datsun great potential for growth. It is also the first time in Datsun's history that the brand has been officially introduced to Russia.
The Datsun car was developed specially for the Russian market, but its concept follows the brand's common global philosophy of offering customers (known as risers) an engaging driving experience, peace of mind ownership and accessibility at the right and transparent price with a competitive Total Cost of Ownership.
The car was styled in Japan, while development was carried out locally by an international team of talented engineers drawing on Nissan Motor Corporation's 80 years of car manufacturing experience and technical expertise. The 21st century Datsun for Russia will deliver a rich, customer-orientated brand experience with no compromise in terms of accessibility, reliability and durability - values deeply rooted in Datsun's heritage.
About Datsun
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced the return of the Datsun brand, Nissan's third global brand, alongside Nissan and Infiniti, in March 2012. Datsun will provide a sustainable motoring experience to optimistic up-and-coming customers in high-growth markets. Datsun represents 80 years of accumulated Japanese car-making expertise and is an important part of Nissan's DNA. Datsun vehicles will start sales in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa from 2014.
Datsun History
Datsun originated in Japan as DAT-GO (the DAT-car) almost a century ago in 1914. The word DAT means "lightning-fast" in Japanese but is also a reference to the first letters of family names of the three financiers who supported the business at the time: Den, Aoyama and Takeuchi. Using the same logic, it was promoted as Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy, or DAT for short.
In 1933, Nissan's founding father Yoshisuke Aikawa took over the business with a vision of "mobility for all." The introduction of a lightweight, economical yet resilient car to meet the aspirations of young Japanese people in the early 1930s was named the "son of DAT" - Datson - which later changed to Datsun. Local engineering and mass-production made the founder's dream a reality.

The New 2015 GT-R Turns Heads With New Features

The New 2015 GT-R Turns Heads With New Features

PERFORMANCE ARTIST

Multi-LED Headlights with Adaptive Front lighting System - Efficient, daylight-spectrum, multi-LED headlights create a distinctive "lightning" motif. But these four LED units do more than look the part. They adjust their illumination pattern based on vehicle speed, and cast a super-wide beam to enhance visibility, especially when cornering.

Hybrid Body Structure - To provide a rigid platform, Nissan engineers pioneered a unique hybrid body using high-strength steel, die-cast aluminum, carbon fiber and composite materials.

Precision Built - During assembly, "jigs" are used to hold body panels and components precisely in place. Vibration testing, laser measurements, and comprehensive inspections by experienced specialists are performed to ensure long-term functionality and to maintain the highest levels of accuracy and precision during assembly.

Hand-polished Finish - Unique to the optional Super Silver paint color is its extensive hand-polishing between each coat - performed under three different light sources, to reveal any imperfections.

MAKING PERFORMANCE OUT OF THIN AIR

Aerodynamics

That big spoiler and all those scoops and vents aren't just there to look cool - they're all doing something. The spoiler is creating downforce. Those ridges on the air dam and vents on the back bumper are managing airflow towards the rear. The vents behind the front fenders are cooling the brakes and creating more downforce, and the scoops on the hood and the signature grille are cooling the engine.

IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Underbody Aerodynamics

The average car has exposed working gear under the car, where wind whips around, creating lift, and slowing you down. The GT-R®, of course, isn't an average car. Its underbody is virtually covered by composite panels, giving it a flat, aerodynamic surface.

Underbody Airflow

At the front of the car, the flat underbody is accelerating the air and channeling it over the brakes, cooling them down. At the back, a carbon fiber diffuser takes that accelerated air and slows it down, creating a vacuum effect that helps the GT-R® stick to the road, or the track.

COMPLETELY CAPTIVATING, EVEN AT RESTLeather-appointed front seats are undoubtedly built for performance. These bolstered sport seats help keep you in place, while cutouts in the driver's seat cushion facilitate leg movement. Rev up the interior with a choice between Red Amber or Ivory with the Premium Interior Package featuring hand stitched semi-aniline seats.

UNCONVENTIONAL WISDOM

3.8-liter Twin-turbocharged V6 Engine

Hit the accelerator and you feel more than raw power. The 545-hp twin-turbo V6 has massive strength, but it's highly refined, even earning a ULEV-II emissions rating. Rather than traditional cast-iron liners, each cylinder features a unique plasma coating with an independent intake system for each bank of cylinders. The powerful twin turbo takes advantage of a Premium Midship (PM) design for balance, where much of the engine sits back in the chassis. Uniquely brilliant, built to perform.

Premium Midship Platform

By using a powerful twin-turbo V6 rather than a larger and heavier V8 or V12, the Nissan GT-R® exploits its PM design for ultimate balance. In the PM design, much of the engine sits well back in the chassis behind the front axle - for crisper turn-in, quick steering response and overall balance. The lighter, more compact engine also pays dividends in performance and other interior room.

BORN ON THE RACETRACK

Handcrafted Engine

Every GT-R® engine is hand-assembled by a single technician - one of only eight allowed the honor - in a dust-free, temperature-controlled clean room. Once complete, the engine is tested. It goes through 44 minutes of bench testing and break in, where the engine is redlined for 10 solid minutes. When the entire GT-R® is built, it is put through its paces on the Tochigi Test track.

Master Driver

From the beginning, we knew GT-R® was going to redefine the breed in terms of performance, refinement and capabilities. So we brought together the AS Class drivers - the top development drivers at Nissan - to create a vehicle that would excel not just at one racetrack, in one kind of weather, or when driven by one master driver: this supercar would have to be for "anytime, anywhere," and be as rewarding to a novice enthusiast as it would to a veteran racer.

STREET WISE

Suspension

Handling duties are managed by a sophisticated 4-wheel independent suspension system mounted to high-precision 6-point front and rear subframes. A special Bilstein® DampTronic® driver-adjustable shock absorber system utilizes multiple vehicle information systems to provide appropriate damping forces and a high level of control for a variety of driving situations. ATTESA E-TS® All-Wheel Drive

Instead of the traditional 50/50 torque split between front and rear axles, the electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive system provides up to 100% of available torque to the rear wheels, and can send up to 50% of torque to the front wheels. This provides the steering feel and response of a rear-wheel vehicle, while giving the added confidence that only AWD can offer.

UNCONVENTIONAL POWER

Dual Clutch 6-speed Transmission

Two clutches, no clutch pedal. The GT-R® 6-speed sequential dual-clutch transmission shifts as quickly as 0.15 seconds when in R-Mode. Inside are separate clutches for the odd and even gears. When in an odd-numbered gear, the adjacent even-numbered gear is "pre-selected," ready to make the shift immediately. Then, to achieve ideal front-to-rear weight distribution, the GT-R® clutches, transmission and transfer case are mounted in the rear of the chassis, creating the world's first independent rear transaxle for an All-Wheel Drive vehicle.

Nissan/Brembo® Braking System

To complement its incredible horsepower and torque, the GT-R® features awe-inspiring braking power. The brakes feature 6-piston front and 4-piston rear calipers for stronger, more equal clamping power - something you'd expect to see on an all-out competition machine. For extreme rigidity with light weight, the caliper is machined from a single one-piece "monoblock" of aluminum.

BUILT FOR THE PURIST

2015 GT-R® Black Edition

The connection between driver and machine gets even more intimate with the GT-R Black Edition's supremely supportive and inspiring to look at driver's environment.

Dry Carbon Fiber Spoiler

This handmade, dry carbon fiber spoiler is significantly lighter and stiffer than a spoiler made of traditional or "wet" carbon fiber. What does that mean for the GT-R®? First off, lighter is better - every little bit of weight saved on the car means time saved on the track. Secondly, the added stiffness in the spoiler decreases flex and increases stability, which translates into more downforce and better handling.

Black/Red Interior

Please remain seated. Heavily bolstered and featuring integrated headrests, the Black Edition's black/red leather Recaro® performance seats keep you firmly in place even during the most intense cornering. Subtle red leather accents on the steering wheel, doors, and gearshift complement those distinctive seats, while the bold GT-R® logo in the center of the steering wheel adds a finishing touch.

BUILT FOR THE EXTREMIST

2015 GT-R® Track Edition

When GT-R® took its first screaming lap around the Nürburgring in 2007, we had the business of serious competition driving in mind. Today, we're still taking performance levels to new, earth-shattering heights. Introducing the 2015 GT-R® Track Edition.

Track-tuned Performance

The Track Edition features a stiffer suspension with specialized Bilstein® Damptronic® gas pressure shocks and higher spring rates. A front spoiler with carbon fiber air ducts increases cooling to the front brakes, and rear brake cooling has also been refined through extensive track testing.

Dry carbon fiber spoiler and trunk lid

A new carbon fiber trunk lid adds stiffness, while weighing nearly half as much as a standard trunk lid. Its smooth surface has been painted so you won't see a difference, but since lighter equals faster, you'll feel it on the track. Top it with the dry carbon fiber spoiler for mighty downforce, and increased stability.

Nissan-powered prototypes show good pace in two practice sessions at Sebring

Nissan-powered prototypes show good pace in two practice sessions at Sebring

SEBRING, Florida - Both the Muscle Milk - Pickett Racing Nissan ORECA and the OAK Racing Nissan Morgan looked to match the pace of the Daytona Prototypes in the first three practice sessions for the Sebring 12-hour on Thursday.  Alex Brundle had the second fastest lap of the first session for OAK racing with a very fast 1:52.86, but the car fell off that pace somewhat in the later sessions, managing only 10th best time in the afternoon and night practices.
The Muscle Milk- Pickett Racing Nissan-powered ORECA was more consistent, with Klaus Graf notching the third fastest lap in the afternoon session, sandwiched by fifth fastest in the morning and Lucas Luhr driving the seventh fastest in the night session. GT Academy Europe Champion Jann Mardenborough will be competing in his first race on American soil with teammates Lucas Luhr and Klaus Graf.
"Sebring is one of the old-school circuits where if you make a mistake, there isn't tens of miles of runoff. There's grass and then there's tire barriers and concrete barriers as well," said the 22-year old Englishman. "It has surfaces and elements I’ve never seen before, so there is a lot to learn.  There's more than 60 cars entered for the race so I think it's going to be really busy and exciting."
The closed cockpit Daytona Prototype cars have led each of the three sessions on the challenging 3.74-mile Sebring track.  Tire wear will be a major factor in the race, as the concrete surface of the converted airfield has an abrasive effect on racing tires.

The 2015 Nissan Murano: Nissan’s Bold New Design Direction

The 2015 Nissan Murano: Nissan's Bold New Design Direction

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - To the design team tasked with creating an all-new third generation Nissan Murano, one thing was perfectly clear: Nothing less than a return to the original's "Wow" factor would be acceptable.
The 2003 Murano more than pushed the boundaries of design, it set the tone for the emerging crossover segment with a sense of elegance and style previously reserved for luxury nameplates. It took the traditional utility vehicle into new territory - where active couples, not just families, could enjoy the benefits of a crossover's higher driving position and flexible passenger/storage space, doing so with a head-turning style that was as much at home at museum openings, as at dog parks or hiking trails.
The original Murano was also credited with bringing in new buyers to the Nissan brand, buyers who remained loyal to both Murano and Nissan. The new design would have to do nothing less, as well as fend off a growing number of new competitors in the increasingly popular crossover SUV segment.
To keep the team ever mindful of this massive challenge, a big red "Reset" button was given a prominent place in the design studio. They also had a secret blueprint for "Wow" in the parallel development of a special crossover concept car, named Resonance, which was set to make its world debut at the 2013 North American International Auto Show.
"Concept cars have historically been used to attract crowds to a manufacturer's display at auto shows, so the people will stay and look at the production vehicles," said Nissan Senior Vice President and Chief Creative Officer Shiro Nakamura. "At Nissan, we're different. We use concepts to explore new design standards with an eye toward bringing them from show stands to showrooms."

A Bold New Look
While the original Murano took its name and inspiration from the elegantly handcrafted forms of Italian Murano glassware, the Resonance Concept and third-generation Murano shared a higher influence - the new age of future flight.
"Advances in aerodynamics and lightweight materials are opening the door to commercial space flight," added Nakamura. "With Resonance and Murano, we wanted to explore a new travel experience here on the ground, but with the same futuristic sense of lightness and air. This inspiration can be seen in features like their sleek boomerang lights, large daylight openings and especially in the bold 'floating' roofline."
While exploring ways to give the new Murano an energetic, aero look, the designers also wanted to retain the original's strong sculptural qualities. Their solution was to combine the usual sketching and computer renderings with three-dimensional modeling. The design process became more organic than usual, with miniature clay models helping define the forms early on and throughout the design process.
As the back and forth between computers and clays continued, unique elements began to emerge in the design's combination of sharp edges and fluid sculpture, and in the sense of curved metal being shaped by the wind. The iconic Nissan boomerang headlight and taillight designs, originally introduced on the Nissan 370Z, were stretched and slimmed even further and integrated into the bold front fenders and rear hatchback glass.
The D-pillars were shaped to resemble a jet and "disconnected" from the slim roof to lighten the cabin. The Power Panoramic Moonroof was lengthened and widened, adding a sense of visual openness and transparency.
As the spaciousness and sleekness of the upper body was established, the lower body was strengthened through use of a wide stance and the balancing of aerodynamics and ruggedness. Special attention was paid to the anchoring aspect of the rich lower body sections and the prominent "V-Motion" grille, which flows seamlessly into the hood and fenders.
As the Murano shape moved from Resonance Concept to potential production vehicle, the fine-tuning kicked into high gear. In the rear, the challenge was to retain the fluid sculptural appearance without limiting crossover functionality.
The rear liftgate was modified to enhance cargo space, while utilizing the dramatic LED taillights to convey a seamless, high-tech quality. The rear bumper was surfaced to direct airflow away from the vehicle. In a similar way, fender lip moldings were shaped and the lower rocker panels were refined to enhance aerodynamics and utility.
The new Murano was subjected to three times the normal wind tunnel testing, eventually resulting in a 0.31 coefficient of drag - the same as many sports cars. The 0.31 Cd is projected to be among the best in the midsize crossover segment.
Key features of the finished 2015 Murano's breathtaking exterior design include standard LED Daytime Running Lights, LED taillights, side rearview mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, power rear liftgate and rear spoiler, along with available front LED headlights, Power Panoramic Moonroof and 20-inch machine-finished aluminum-alloy wheels.

An Elevated Interior Experience
As the new Murano exterior was literally taking shape, a separate design team set about creating a fresh new interior with equal "Wow." Following the "new way to travel" theme suggested by the futuristic exterior - along with elements of the Resonance Concept interior - they took advantage of key features of the previous generation Muranos.  That meant enhancing the inherent crossover ride height and superior visibility by optimizing the angles and thickness of the bottom of the A-pillar and the size and position of the outside rearview mirrors.
The instrument panel followed the Resonance's upscale, social lounge design, featuring low, wide instrument panel and a large center information monitor. The number of audio and navigation switches was cut by more than half, replacing complexity with intuitive simplicity.
A low but wide center console was developed to encourage interaction between front and rear occupants without sacrificing utility.
"Murano owners tend to be highly engaged in career and cultural activities. While highly connected to social media, they also favor personal engagements, so we developed the Murano interior to provide premium 'social lounge' atmosphere," explained Nakamura. "At the same time, we respected their need to have more utility and flexibility than a sedan, so we also paid special attention to the practical aspects of a crossover."

The Murano cargo area is larger than the previous generation and more practical with a fold-flat rear seat with available power return. All rear seating/cargo configurations can be done from the back, with no walking to each door.

Like the exterior, the Murano's interior forms and shapes are highly sculptural, merging comfort aspects with a sense of visual interest and beauty. Use of premium, plush materials adds to the "elevated" experience, offering a luxury feel without the luxury price.
High-end features include standard NASA-inspired Zero Gravity front and rear outboard seats and available leather-appointed seating in three coordinated color palettes, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, advanced Bose® design with nine speakers plus dual subwoofers, HD Radio® and customizable advanced lighting system.
The driver is treated to Nissan's Advanced Drive-Assist Display, which features a 7.0-inch high-resolution color display with easy-to-read font. The available 8.0-inch center color display offers multi-touch control of the NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps.
The rear seat area was designed for adult use, with increased legroom (versus the previous generation Murano) and available rear USB port. Access to the rear seat is enhanced with easier ingress and egress. The rear seat is also bathed in light by day or moonlight with the available Power Panoramic Moonroof, which has a 40 percent longer sliding length and 29 percent larger opening than the previous generation design.

Nissan's Design Promise
The 2015 Murano is the first production vehicle with Nissan's bold new design direction, as expressed in three recent concepts - Resonance, Friend-ME and the Sport Sedan Concept that debuted at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
These concepts' strong "V-Motion" front-end styling, boomerang-shaped lighting, floating roof treatments, thin and sculpted pillars, energetic and emotional flow on the bodysides, and low and wide stances represent a strong Nissan styling signature to be seen on U.S. and worldwide streets soon. Whether SUV, smaller car or sport sedan, this design language is a hallmark of Nissan's future.
"At Nissan, design is our brand promise, a promise that pulls people into our vehicles where they will be treated to an exciting driving experience," said Nakamura. "As the first of our new concept-based production vehicles coming to market, Murano sets our new standard. It will soon be joined by a production version of the Sport Sedan Concept, and by other breakthrough designs that will follow."
The 2015 Nissan Murano will be available at all 7 Mossy Nissan locations in San Diego in Fall 2014.

Nissan develops world first analysis technique for better lithium ion battery durability

Nissan develops world first analysis technique for better lithium ion battery durability

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Can the battery performance of electric vehicles be improved by observing electrons? Nissan sought an answer to this question through an advanced research project in partnership with universities in Japan. The result: Nissan Motor Company and its affiliate Nissan Arc Ltd. today announced the development of the world's first analysis method that enables direct observation of electron activity in the cathode material of lithium ion batteries during charging and discharging.

Applying this analysis technique to future research and design of battery materials could enable Nissan researchers to develop high-capacity and high-durability batteries that may extend the driving distance of zero emission EVs and improve their durability.

Nissan Arc Ltd., a 100-percent subsidiary of Nissan Motor Company, developed the analysis method in a joint R&D effort with Tokyo University, Kyoto University and Osaka Prefecture University. The newly developed technique provides an accurate depiction of how electrons are emitted from certain elements that constitute the cathode material of lithium ion batteries when charging and discharging.

Takao Asami, Nissan senior vice president and president of Nissan Arc Ltd., said: "Creating this analysis technique was a major step toward the further development of high-capacity, next-generation lithium ion batteries. It will play an important part in our future R&D aimed at extending the driving range of future zero emission vehicles."

In order to develop high capacity, long-life lithium ion batteries, the maximum possible amount of lithium must be stored in the electrode's active material, which allows it to generate the highest possible number of electrons. To develop such a material, an accurate reading of the electron activity inside the battery is essential. Existing analysis methods did not allow researchers to observe the movement of electrons. It was not possible to determine how the various electrodes' active material - i.e. manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), oxygen (O) - was emitting electrons and how many electrons were actually being emitted.

The newly developed analysis method combines x-ray absorption spectroscopy¹ that utilizes L-absorption edges² and the first principle calculation³ from Japan's Earth Simulator supercomputer?.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy had been used in the past to analyze batteries. However, the majority of this analysis was done using K-absorption edges that can only observe restrained electrons in the atom (electrons that are not involved in the charging and discharging due to the vicinity to the nucleus) and not the actual electrons involved in cell reaction. By applying x-ray absorption spectroscopy that utilizes L-absorption edges, electrons that were directly involved with the cell reaction can be observed. Accurate analysis of the amount of electron mobility is made possible by combining the observation results with first principle calculations from the Earth Simulator supercomputer.

For years scientists have wanted to understand the origin of electrons during charging and discharging, and this newly-developed analysis method finally makes it possible. Scientists can observe the exact phenomenon inside a battery cell, especially the behavior of active materials of electrodes, permitting further study of better-performing, longer-lasting electrode materials.

Nissan Arc has used the new analysis technique to investigate lithium-rich high-capacity electrode materials, which are considered promising agents to increase energy density by 150 percent. The analysis revealed that at a high potential state, electrons originating from oxygen were active during charging. Meanwhile, electrons that originated from manganese were observed to be active during the discharge reaction. These findings were a big step forward toward the commercial development of lithium-rich electrode materials, which can produce higher-capacity, long-lasting batteries.

*1 X-ray absorption spectroscopy: An analysis method of electronic state and local structure of materials obtained by measuring the increase x-ray absorption energy (absorption edge) after irradiating variant strength x-rays.

*2 Absorption edge: The x-ray absorption value of energy (wavelength) that abruptly increases when the x-ray energy (wavelength) is changed. It is referred to as the K-absorption edge or L-absorption edge depending on the electron orbit.

*3 First Principle Calculation: A calculation method of electronic states without the use of experimental values.

*4 Earth Simulator: A supercomputer owned by the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC) originally developed to evaluate global environments.

The JUKE's combination of highly individual styling, strong driving dynamics and sophisticated interior equipment has allowed it storm from zero to 420,000 sales in less than 40 months, easily eclipsing its rivals.

Already recognized as the design trend-setter, the new JUKE benefits from a series of design enhancements, new engines, new equipment and a wide-ranging personalization program.

Among the changes are a new design at the front and rear with greater emphasis on both premium refinement and sporty design cues; a new downsized 1.2-liter turbocharged engine offering greater performance, economy and lower emissions; a revised 1.6-liter DIG-T engine; improved four-wheel drive with Torque Vectoring System; new alloy wheels; advanced equipment including a new audio system, the latest generation NissanConnect driver-vehicle interface, Nissan Safety Shield, Nissan's Dynamic Control system, plus the option of a new opening glass roof.

JUKE is the best seller in the premium B-segment, outperforming all direct competitors including those from the top German brands. And it's not just the entry-level models which have helped JUKE to the top: the best selling engine to date has been the 1.6-liter petrol unit while the top Tekna grade accounts for more than one third of all sales.

Exterior

Bold design has always set the JUKE apart from any rival, offering a mixture of crossover toughness with sporting appeal that has seen it become a design icon.

To radically alter the proportions would undermine the JUKE's unmistakable presence, but designers have still managed to make significant changes to the car's styling.

At the front, the upper lamps have been redesigned and now incorporate bi-intensity LED daytime running lamps while the headlamps now have Xenon bulbs for better visibility and new lens covers. The grille incorporates the new Nissan brand signature while the front has been toughened with new and more robust trim beneath the bumper.

Door mirrors have been revised to include LED side turn strip repeaters and, where fitted, cameras for the Around View Monitor.

At the rear the bumper has a more aggressive shape to match new revised boomerang tail lamps with LED light guide technology, giving the new JUKE a more distinctive appearance at night.

The new color palette now extends to ten colors and includes three new shades: Sunlight Yellow metallic, Ink Blue metallic and solid Red.

A new range of wheels completes the exterior revisions, with 16-inch steel and alloys available on entry-level Visia models and different styles of 17-inch alloys on Acenta and Tekna variants. A new 18-inch alloy wheel will also be available with colored inserts available allowing drivers to add their personal touch.

In addition, the extensive new personalization packs include the opportunity to add drama with brightly colored inserts, which completely change the look and feel of the wheels. Different packs also allow contrasting colors to be applied to the mirror caps, side sills, roof spoiler and door handles.

Interior personalization

In the same way that the exterior styling differentiates JUKE from anything else on the road, so the interior has a number of distinctive features, including the center console inspired by a motorbike. And again, changing these features for the sake of it would be counter-productive.

Instead Nissan designers have found ways to make the interior even bolder and more dynamic with different interior themes. In standard cars, the interior theme is a sophisticated grey, giving a technical feel to the car. Add one of the interior personalization packs and features such as the center console, door trims and other elements can be colored red, white, black or even a bright yellow.

Depending on the model, there are two styles of fabric for the seat upholstery - comfort and sport - with leather trim on top versions.

Practicality

Changes have also been made to the shape of the trunk area in two-wheel drive models to boost luggage space by an impressive 40 percent, taking the overall capacity to a class-leading 354 liters - unlike rivals, JUKE can carry a large and a medium suitcase at the same time, and is also deep and wide enough to carry a chassis-type pushchair.

Versatility is further enhanced with flat folding rear seat, making it easier to load large objects, while the inclusion of a two-stage floor in the luggage area makes the space even more flexible.

Equipment

Standard equipment on all models includes LED daytime running lamps, CD radio with an AUX-In socket, gear shift indicator to promote a more efficient driving style and tire pressure monitor. The Visia 1.5 dCi and 1.6 Pack versions add alloy wheels, manual air conditioning, drive computer and driver seat height adjustment.

Acenta models are enhanced with front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic air conditioning, remote audio controls, Bluetooth connectivity for phone and audio streaming, cruise control and limiter, Nissan Dynamic Control System and chrome interior touches.

Enhances for the new JUKE, Nissan Dynamic Control is an advanced driver control system giving the choice of three different driving modes - Normal, Sport or Eco - along with instant driving information and vehicle setting controls.

Tekna models add power folding door mirrors, light and rain sensors, i-Key with Start/Stop and the latest NissanConnect with rear-view parking/reversing camera, Around View Monitor and Safety Shield.

NissanConnect now offers smartphone connectivity with access to a variety of apps ranging from social media platforms to entertainment including Internet radio through a large, 5.8-inch color touch screen. The latest generation satellite navigation system integrates with Google® to reveal a host of useful information from weather forecasts to the location of fuel stations, hotels, restaurants and many other points of interest.

A send-to-car function also allows drivers to search for their destination at home and send destination instructions to NissanConnect system at the click of a button. The system includes Bluetooth audio streaming and mobile phone integration as well as Aux-in and USB slots.

When not in infotainment mode, the screen doubles as a monitor for the newest version of Nissan's pioneering Around View Monitor which gives a complete real-time 360 degree ‘helicopter' view around the car to make maneuvering as safe and easy as possible. Using the AVM cameras together with sensors, radar and other advanced technology, JUKE's Safety Shield incorporates a number of features engineered to make the car as safe as possible. These include Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning and Moving Object Detection, which gives visual and audible warnings to avoid potential collisions.

The final option opens a whole new world to Acenta and Tekna owners, literally. A large open-able glass panel allows not just daylight to flood into the cabin but also fresh air as required. When opened, the panel sits on top of the rear portion of the roof so as not to steal interior headroom. The glass panel measures 964mm wide by 837mm long to cover two thirds of the roof area. This is matched by an opening width of 693mm and an opening length of 301mm to add to the feeling of airiness in the cockpit.

Engines and drivetrains

Three engines are available for new JUKE in Europe, with changes to the two petrol options: one is new and the other extensively revised. The existing and acclaimed 1.5 dCi diesel with 110ps (81kW) continues unchanged.

The Alliance-developed 1.2-liter DIG-T petrol engine, which replaces the outgoing 117ps 1.6-liter unit, is an advanced turbocharged direct injection engine delivering 115ps (85kW) and generating 190Nm of torque.

Despite its modest size, the 1.2-liter (1197cc) turbocharged engine packs a real punch, offering sharper acceleration and greater torque (190Nm) for added flexibility than the outgoing 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine.

Its lower weight, standard automatic Stop/Start feature and more fuel-efficient operation translates into cleaner and more economical performance. The 1.2 DIG-T engine emits 126g/km* of CO2 and has a fuel consumption figure of 5.5 l/100km*.

The existing 1.6 DIG-T petrol unit has been further improved to deliver lower end torque below 2,000rpm. Producing 140kW, it is already Euro6 compliant with target emissions of 139g/km of CO2 for the 2WD versions. Among its new features are a higher combustion ratio (increased from 9.5 to 10.5:1), improved low friction technologies and cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation.

As well as a six-speed manual transmission, new JUKE 1.6 DIG-T 4WD is optionally available with a new Xtronic transmission gearbox, which further improves fuel efficiency, acceleration and all-round performance.

"New JUKE builds on the qualities that made the original such a success. Its unique crossover styling is even more energetic, and the interior makes a real statement.

"The new drivetrain options and advanced technology on offer to the driver keep new JUKE ahead of the rest," said Guillaume Cartier.

The following are quotes about the Scientific Advisory Council from its members.

Maarten Sierhuis, Ph.D., director, Nissan Research Center Silicon Valley

"I'm honored to welcome these leaders in user experience, human-robot interaction and human-systems engineering to the Nissan Research Center – Silicon Valley Scientific Advisory Council. I am thrilled to have their invaluable insights and feedback as we embark on the development of autonomous vehicles at NRC-SV."

Council Chair Jeff Bradshaw, senior research scientist for the Florida Institute of Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC)

"I'm excited to work with a stellar group of experts as part of the Nissan Silicon Valley Research Center Scientific Advisory Council. Nissan's commitment to a human-centered rather than a technology-centered design approach puts them in a unique and enviable competitive position. As a result, they will produce well connected, environmentally aware, and highly capable vehicles that excel in their safety, usability and usefulness."

James Euchner, council member and vice president of Global Innovation, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company

"It's an interesting time in the auto industry, as vehicles are becoming more intelligent, more connected and increasingly environment-aware. The paramount concern as we move toward autonomous vehicles will be safety, but the potential benefits to consumers in convenience, traffic management and mobility are exciting."

Don Norman, council member and co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group

"The automobile is now undergoing radical transformation, in part because of major changes in the powertrain and energy sources for propulsion and because of increased environmental concerns, but most especially because of the added powers of automation and the enhanced desires of automobile occupants for increased communication features. The increased features give rise to multiple challenges, such as driver distraction and, with automation, moving the driver 'out of the loop' so driver control becomes difficult or impossible. As a result, in this major transition, there are many challenges, especially in the ways that people interact with the systems to give them enhanced pleasure with enhanced safety."

Missy Cummings, associate professor at Duke University and director of the Humans and Autonomy Laboratory

"Driverless car technology is promising in terms of creating safer and more efficient driving systems, but the robustness of the technology and the interaction between the human driver and driverless technology are not yet well understood. I look forward to working with Nissan on issues of automation mode confusion, skill degradation, boredom and distraction, and trust issues for driverless cars."

Terry Fong, director of Intelligent Robotics Group at the NASA Ames Research Center

"NASA and Nissan share a common interest in advancing the capabilities of autonomous and connected vehicles. These robotic vehicles can perform important services for humans to increase safety, reduce workload and enable significant cost and energy savings."

Nissan Asks Young Women to Join in STEM Career Paths

Nissan Asks Young Women to Join in STEM Career Paths

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Fostering enthusiasm in young girls for careers in science and technology was the focus for DigiGirlz 2014. The program took place at Nissan's headquarters in Nashville, Tenn.

More than 100 high school girls attended the free event sponsored by Nissan, Microsoft and Middle Tennessee State University. DigiGirlz is a Microsoft YouthSpark program that provides high school girls an opportunity to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a fun and innovative setting.

"Being here today is fantastic. It has allowed me to meet and connect with a bunch of different professionals and even people from graduate schools from various colleges. It is very nice and empowering to connect with these people, and to know that there are people out there, women in STEM fields, who are doing incredible things," said Allison Baldwin, a DigiGirlz student attendee.

The inspirational Marlin Page, a motivational speaker and self-described online safety evangelist, delivered the keynote address. Page was introduced to a technology boot camp in her developmental years, which taught her to code in seven different languages in 13 weeks. Following that, in less than a year at the age of 25, Page was maintaining and developing software for the automotive and banking industry.

"I believe young girls need to be involved with STEM because technology can definitely transform their lives. Technology takes you to places where you have never been," said Page. "Young girls are out there playing video games, on social media, and it is important for them to know that they can also create these things as well."

Nissan's Women's Business Synergy Team (WBST) presented a $500 college scholarship at the event. Applicants provided a teacher recommendation, high school transcript and answered an essay question.

"For Nissan, this is a wonderful opportunity for us as employees to be able to give back directly to all of these girls who, at this point, are trying to figure out what they would like to do with their lives and careers," said Trisha Jung, Nissan Dealer Operations. "We have a chance to help them explore all of these great concepts and help them to build confidence and vision that anything is possible for them."

Datsun is Back

Datsun is Back

    • First customer of the 21st century will take delivery on March 19, 2014, in India
    • All new car brand with a 100-year heritage

YOKOHAMA, Japan - On March 19, the first Datsun cars sold in the 21st century will be delivered to customers in India. It fulfills a promise made two years ago to bring back the marque that made car ownership mainstream in Japan and numerous other countries, and now returns as the brand of choice for the risers in today's high-growth markets.

The first 21st century Datsun customers will be in India. They will be taking to the roads in their new Datsun GO exactly one hundred years from the launch of the first ever DAT car, in Japan. Over that century, Datsun went on to sell more than 20 million vehicles in 190 countries.

The keys to the new Datsun's will be handed over at celebration events planned for March 19 and March 20 in the Indian cities of Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

The Datsun GO will be offered through a network of more than 120 Datsun dealer outlets across the country. Detailed pricing will be announced on March 19th. As disclosed earlier, Nissan Motor Private India Limited will distribute Datsun vehicles in India.

Datsun is expanding rapidly around the world. New Datsun models will be introduced in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa later this year.

In 1933, Nissan's founding father Yoshisuke Aikawa took over the business with a vision of "mobility for all." The introduction of a lightweight, economical yet resilient car to meet the aspirations of young Japanese people in the early 1930s was named the "son of DAT" – Datson - which later changed to Datsun. Local engineering and mass-production made the founder's dream a reality.

New Nissan JUKE: Designed to thrill

New Nissan JUKE: Designed to thrill

  • Efficient new downsized 1.2 DIG-T turbocharged petrol engine
  • Dramatic design enhanced with significant styling changes pushing further both premium and sporty design cues

  • Technology enhanced with advanced NissanConnect system

  • Nissan Safety Shield added along with groundbreaking Around View Monitor four-camera parking aid

  • Improved luggage capacity +40% and enhanced versatility

  • Extensive personalization program

  • Opening sunroof and Xenon lights

  • On sale in Europe from summer 2014

Note to editors: The following contains Geneva Motor Show information about the new JUKE in the European market. Information about the new JUKE for the North American market will be released at a later date.

GENEVA, Switzerland - When it arrived a little more than three years ago, the Nissan JUKE used innovation to create a whole new market segment. Just as the Nissan Qashqai pioneered the original crossover market, the JUKE used dramatic design and advanced technology to break new ground in a more compact crossover package.

The JUKE's combination of highly individual styling, strong driving dynamics and sophisticated interior equipment has allowed it storm from zero to 420,000 sales in less than 40 months, easily eclipsing its rivals.

Now, following Nissan's established practice of constant development comes the next chapter in the JUKE story. Establishing itself as the original stand-out model in the growing small crossover market with premium style and refinement, the new JUKE is ready to once again stamp its authority on the segment it created.

Revisions in the luggage area have increased space by 40 percent in two-wheel drive versions up to 354L, while there's even greater opportunity for owners to really stamp their own personality on their JUKE. A range of new colors and interior themes are available with a number of different personalization packs.

The changes and range additions will accelerate the growth of Nissan's second most popular model in Europe, helping it to emulate the remarkable achievements of its big brother Qashqai.

But the big NISMO news is the advanced preview of the extreme new JUKE NISMO RS, a totally focused model with more power (218PS/160kW), upgraded brakes, a stiffer body and a limited slip differential on two wheel drive versions.

Buyers have also been attracted by a strong range of special versions - notably the Shiro and the advanced n-tec models - and the Kuro and Ministry of Sound limited editions, while the sports oriented NISMO has added driving thrills as well as breadth to the range.

On its way to a total of 420,000 sales, JUKE has achieved 135,000 sales in 2013 with its popular set to increase with the introduction of the new version. All JUKE models sold in Europe are built in Europe, at Nissan's highly productive plant in Sunderland, UK where three shifts per day are needed to cope with demand.

Significantly for Nissan, JUKE has attracted a huge number of buyers new to the brand. As much as 85 per cent of sales have been to first-time Nissan owners, not only making it the highest conquest model in the Nissan range but a model that comfortably outperforms the B-segment average with many of those new buyers downsizing from larger cars.

"We stunned the industry with Qashqai, the original crossover, and we've done it again with JUKE. If anything, JUKE is even more daring and different than Qashqai and appeals to a younger, more out-going audience.

"The changes we have made to new JUKE will extend that appeal even further to cement Nissan's position as the leading brand in the crossover market," said Guillaume Cartier, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing for Nissan in Europe.

New JUKE will go on sale across Europe in the summer, 2014.

The changes in detail:

Exterior

Bold design has always set the JUKE apart from any rival, offering a mixture of crossover toughness with sporting appeal that has seen it become a design icon.

Taxi Electric is First to use Nissan’s e-NV2OO taxi in Amsterdam

Taxi Electric is First to use Nissan's

e-NV2OO taxi in Amsterdam

  • This summer Taxi Electric becomes the first taxi company in Amsterdam to adopt the zero-emission Nissan e-NV200
  • Taxi Electric first 100% Nissan LEAF fleet since November 2011

  • Pioneering Amsterdam-based company have covered 1.5 million km demonstrating Nissan EVs' quality and reliability

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - Taxi Electric will be the first private taxi company to add the new 100-percent electric Nissan e-NV200 taxi to its green-energy zero-emission fleet.

The combination of Nissan's innovative zero-emission technology, in the form of the 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF, and Taxi Electric's ground-breaking city transportation model have been a recipe for success since the start of operation in 2011. Now the two companies have teamed up again to build on this success and take the next step forward by introducing the game-changing all-electric Nissan e-NV200 taxi this summer.

Amsterdam-based Taxi Electric operates a fleet of 25 Nissan LEAF vehicles. It was the first private taxi service to switch to a fleet of 100% electric taxis in 2011. The Dutch company's fleet of Nissan LEAFs has now amassed a trouble-free 1.5 million km in taxi operations – proof of the electric vehicle's high quality and reliability.

Andy Palmer, EVP Nissan said: "Taxi Electric was one of the first electric taxi companies in the world, and I've been impressed with their progress since their launch two years ago. They were the first to prove that zero-emission taxis – in the form of Nissan LEAFs – are a viable alternative. They have covered an astonishing distance in their fleet in such a short time and have shown just how reliable our electric technology is in a demanding environment. Their pioneering spirit closely matches ours, and we are certain they will continue their success with the ground-breaking Nissan e-NV200."

Ruud Zandvliet, founder of Taxi Electric added: "Two years ago we started with 10 Nissan LEAFs. Each of these travelled well over 100,000 km and proved to be extremely reliable. Since last summer demand for our taxis is growing rapidly, which allowed us to double our fleet. We are very excited about the e-NV200 as it is designed to be a taxi. This will improve our offering and open new business opportunities for us."

Taxi Electric will not be alone in making the Nissan e-NV200 part of their taxi fleet, with the city of Barcelona having signed a memorandum of understanding with Nissan to promote it as a taxi for the Spanish region. Global production of the Nissan e-NV200 begins in May this year, with sales starting in the summer.

Cars.com selects Nissan Sentra and Versa sedan to its “Top 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy” list

Cars.com selects Nissan Sentra and Versa sedan to its "Top 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy" list

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - For Nissan, affordability meets uncompromised fuel efficiency and modern technology. This week, Cars.com, the leading online resource for buying and selling new and used cars, recognized two Nissan vehicles – Sentra and Versa Sedan – in its "Top 10 Cheapest New Cars You Can Buy" list, which identifies vehicles with the lowest sticker price and fuel costs on the market. Nissan was the only manufacturer with more than one vehicle on the list.

The 2014 Nissan Versa Sedan S Plus ranked third on the list with a starting price of $13,790** and 35 mpg combined highway/city fuel economy. The 2014 Nissan Sentra S with Xtronic transmission finished tenth with a starting price of $16,790** and 34 mpg combined highway/city fuel economy.
To create the list, Cars.com editors calculated sticker price and destination fees plus eight year fuel cost to decide which vehicles deliver the biggest "financial bang for your hard-earned buck." With starting price and eight-year fuel cost combined, the Sentra totaled $29,247, and the Versa Sedan amounted to $25,914. The last time Cars.com ran this test was in 2008, when the 2008 Versa placed sixth with a total cost of $30,002. While the price remains remarkably low, the fuel efficiency and technological advancement of the vehicles – including available technologies such as Bluetooth® and NissanConnect™ with Navigation – are as impressive as ever.
"Both Sentra and Versa Sedan feature notable fuel economy, advanced technology options, and an economical starting price that even the most frugal buyers can appreciate," said Dan Mohnke, vice president, Nissan Chief Marketing Manager & Marketing Operations. "In addition to impressive fuel economy and advanced technology, Sentra features a high-quality interior design with soft-touch instrument panel and door armrests, while Versa Sedan offers the most rear legroom in its class*. We're providing our buyers more for each dollar they pay, and we're honored to be recognized by Cars.com."
The affordable Nissan Sentra compact sedan offers a "class above" look and feel inside and out, along with refined performance and features. Its fuel-efficient 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine helps deliver 34 mpg combined highway/city fuel economy and a more than 415-mile real-world driving range. Available technology includes NissanConnectTM with Navigation and NissanConnectTM Apps smartphone integration for iPhone® and Android, Bose® Premium audio system with eight speakers, Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System and RearView Monitor.
The popular Nissan Versa Sedan continues to redefine entry-level car value. It combines a sophisticated exterior design, well-appointed interior and exceptional room for five adults – including more rear legroom than some mid-size sedans. Versa Sedan is marked by innovations such as an available affordable integrated navigation system and standard 1.6-liter engine with an advanced dual fuel injection system, which helps produce 40 mpg highway fuel economy. Versa Sedan is offered in four models: S, S Plus, SV and SL.

Nissan unrivalled with their crossover family at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show!

Nissan unrivalled with their crossover family at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show!

ROLLE, Switzerland - Nissan's command of the European crossover segment is further reinforced at the 84th Geneva Motor Show with the brand's unrivalled crossover family taking center stage. The all-new X-Trail and all-new Qashqai highlight Nissan's ongoing crossover development, which will be strengthened by the arrival of another next-generation model in Geneva.

The 2014 Geneva Motor Show also showcases Nissan's diverse innovation. From the world debut of the zero-emissions e-NV200 to the European premiere of the GT-R NISMO, Nissan is demonstrating its unrivalled passion for design, engineering and innovation.
Corporate update
Record levels of demand for its advanced and technologically innovative products, plus a raft of new or revised vehicles, means that Nissan will build more cars, crossovers and light commercial vehicles than ever at its European plants in 2014. Existing high levels of demand for class-leading vehicles such as the Nissan Qashqai and the all-electric Nissan LEAF, and a significant second all-electric vehicle, e-NV200, means that Nissan will be using even more of the production capacity at its plants in the UK, Spain and Russia. And there's more to come.  The significance of Nissan's European manufacturing plants cannot be underestimated: Last year, some 80 percent of all Nissan vehicles sold in Europe were built in Europe. In the 30 years since manufacturing began in the region, Europe has built more than 10 million Nissan vehicles.
New X-Trail
Now fully integrated into Nissan's crossover range, the all-new X-Trail combines advanced 4x4 capabilities with a host of design and engineering features that have become hallmarks of Nissan crossovers. The new model also introduces a number of innovative new-to-sector technologies such as bi-LED headlamps, Nissan Safety Shield and a fully integrated third-generation NissanConnect navigation and infotainment system.
Built on the Renault-Nissan Alliance Common Module Family platform, the all-new X-Trail also offers significantly improved practicality, with a new "theater-style" seating layout, sliding second row of seats and fully integrated third row of seats with improved leg and headroom.
As a result of this complete redesign and re-engineering process, the new X-Trail completes what is the most comprehensive and capable SUV crossover line-ups in the industry.

e-NV200 production premiere
Nissan is set to continue its dominance of the electric vehicle sector with the introduction of the e-NV200, which brings unprecedented refinement, with zero emissions and ultra-low running costs. Combining the best elements of two multi-award winning vehicles – Nissan LEAF and Nissan NV200, past World Car of the Year and International Van of the Year respectively – e-NV200 is ready to change the face of the city.
The e-NV200's high performance pure electric drivetrain, based on that used in the acclaimed Nissan LEAF, is allied to the class-leading cargo volume of theNV200 to create a practical and versatile vehicle capable of carrying people or goods while producing neither exhaust emissions nor noise pollution. When sales start in Europe in May, e-NV200 will be available as a van or as a five-seat people carrier in Combi or more luxurious Evalia guises. Although mainly targeted at businesses, e-NV200 will also appeal to private users with large families.
GT-R NISMO
Making its European debut in production form, the mighty Nissan GT-R NISMO is the fastest and most advanced Nissan performance production car ever. Honed to perfection on the legendary Nürburgring Norsdschleife – where it holds the lap record for a volume production car – the new GT-R NISMO perfectly embodies the spirit of the NISMO brand, delivering breathtaking performance.
The new GT-R NISMO is powered by a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine that has been extensively modified by NISMO engineers. Combined with a revised aerodynamic package that generates an additional 100kg of downforce and a bespoke suspension set-up fine-tuned in Europe, it makes the latest GT-R the most remarkable to date.
Nissan BladeGlider concept
Shown to a European audience for the first time at Geneva, the bold new BladeGlider concept challenges conventional thinking on performance car design. Inspired by Nissan's innovative ZEOD RC Zero Emission on Demand race car – set to take part in the 2014 Le Mans 24hr race under the event's "Garage 56" rules – the BladeGlider features radical narrow front-track design layout that creates a distinctive swept-wing shape when viewed from above. Featuring perfect weight distribution thanks to the placement of the lithium ion batteries and in-board motors between the rear wheels, the BladeGlider optimizes power delivery with significantly reduced stresses at the front of the vehicle.

New Qashqai
Celebrating one of the most successful launches in Nissan history, the all-new Qashqai is set to be a major draw at the Geneva Motor Show. Ushering in a new era in crossover design, the second-generation model has attracted unprecedented interest from motorists and the world's press. With production now fully underway at Nissan's record-breaking Sunderland (UK) plant, the new Qashqai demonstrates Nissan's leadership in the crossover sector with numerous sector-first technologies and a host of innovative and practical design features. These include Nissan Safety Shield - a suite of safety systems that combine to deliver one of the most comprehensive protection packages in the industry - and the latest NissanConnect system with full smartphone integration.

Year of Change in SUPER GT in Japan

Year of Change in SUPER GT in Japan

YOKOHAMA, Japan - Nissan has traditionally won the championship in SUPER GT racing when debuting a new car, and if so, this season should be a banner year.

The monocoque, transmission, brakes, shock absorbers and fuel tank - about 70 percent of the new GT500 Class car - will be common to all cars in the series, based on the same new technical regulations as the DTM (German Touring Car Championship).

Teams can develop engines, and new regulations will allow manufacturers to freely develop the aerodynamic characteristics of their cars, of keen interest to fans and enthusiasts in the upcoming 2014 SUPER GT500 Class race series.

Minimum weight restrictions may be lighter than previous years due to the new engines for the GT500 Class. Direct injection, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged motors will be used, replacing the familiar sounds of the V-8 engines.

The Nissan GT-R NISMO GT500 with the new engine and newly developed aerodynamics broke the course record for GT500 cars at Sepang Circuit in Malaysia during winter testing.

Expectations of faster average lap times of one to two seconds are raising expectations for the season's Round 1, beginning April 5-6 at Okayama Circuit in western Japan.

Nissan Teams competing for the championship in the GT500 class include the #23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R, #12 Calsonic IMPUL GT-R, #24 D'Station ADVAN GT-R, and the #46 S Road MOLA GT-R.

The new livery for the #23 car was displayed at Nissan Global Headquarters in Yokohama on Sunday along with drivers and teams for the upcoming 2014 season.

In the above video, Yutaka Suzuki, NISMO General Manager for Race Engineering, discusses the new rule changes and the upcoming 2014 SUPER GT Race Series.
